What Is the 'Cup of Coffee' Conversation as an Intervention?
The Cup of Coffee Conversation is a peer-to-peer approach developed by Dr Gerald Hickson and colleagues at Vanderbilt University. It’s designed to tactfully address unprofessional behaviour in its earliest stages — not with confrontation, but through respectful reflection and accountability.
Delivered informally, often one-to-one in private, the conversation shares a single observed incident of concerning behaviour. There's no judgement, there's no telling. It is a quiet but powerful nudge that prompts the recipient to reflect — before a pattern of incivility can take hold.
“Most people who undermine safety or culture don’t know they’re doing it — but silence
can be mistaken for endorsement.”
– Adapted from the work of Dr Hickson and the Vanderbilt CPPA
Why These Conversations Matter
Unaddressed incivility can erode trust, hinder communication, and compromise patient safety. The 'Cup of Coffee' approach empowers healthcare professionals to:
-
Address issues promptly: Tackling behaviours early prevents escalation.
-
Promote self-awareness: Encouraging reflection can lead to behavioural change.
-
Strengthen team cohesion: Open dialogue fosters mutual respect and understanding.
By integrating this intervention into daily practice, teams can maintain a positive and professional environment.
